Gordon Brown calls for total abolition' of two-child benefit cap
"From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging."
"Former prime minister Gordon Brown has called for the total abolition of the two-child benefit cap, putting pressure on ministers to do more to tackle the scar of child poverty in Britain. Speaking at a conference to mark the 60th anniversary of the Child Poverty Action Group (CPAG), the former Labour premier and chancellor shot down proposals to water down the controversial policy, instead calling for its complete removal."
Gordon Brown called for the total abolition of the two-child benefit cap, urging ministers to take stronger action against child poverty. Campaigners at the Child Poverty Action Group say the cap pulls 109 children into poverty each day and predict child poverty will rise from 4.5 million to 4.7 million by the end of the parliament without intervention. The cap prevents parents claiming the child element of universal credit, 292.81 a month, for a third or subsequent child born after April 2017. The government's delayed child poverty strategy and the upcoming Budget increase pressure to consider abolishing the measure.
