Gatwick Airport will construct a privately financed £2.2 billion second runway by moving its emergency runway 12 metres north, enabling departures of narrow-bodied aircraft such as Airbus A320s and Boeing 737s. The change will allow about 100,000 additional flights per year and is expected to generate thousands of jobs and significant investment. Approval followed adjustments covering noise mitigation and public-transport proportions. Gatwick management will set non-binding public-transport targets. Residents affected by increased noise can request funding for triple-glazed windows. The Planning Inspectorate initially rejected the application but later recommended approval if changes were made.
