Tim Loughton, a former UK MP and minister, suspects he was targeted by Chinese spying after being sanctioned by China in 2021. Two men accused of spying for China had charges dropped, prompting questions about the case and evidence. China has denied all claims and rejected spy narratives. Loughton cited his record criticising Chinese human rights abuses and pushing to exclude Chinese state firms from UK infrastructure as reasons he might attract interest. He described a 2024 deportation from Djibouti and warned of potential Interpol-related arrest risks where repatriation agreements with China exist.
