"Thousands of taxpayers chose to spend part of their Christmas break tackling their tax affairs, with more than 4,600 people filing their Self Assessment returns on Christmas Day alone, new figures show. Data released by HM Revenue and Customs reveals that 37,435 people submitted their returns between Christmas Eve and Boxing Day, suggesting that for a growing number of taxpayers, festive filing is becoming a seasonal habit."

37,435 Self Assessment returns were submitted between Christmas Eve and Boxing Day, with Christmas Eve the busiest day (22,350) and peak hours mid-morning and mid-afternoon on each day. Christmas Day saw 4,606 returns, peaking between 1pm and 2pm, and Boxing Day had 10,479 returns. HM Revenue and Customs urged taxpayers to start returns early ahead of the 31 January deadline. Filing by 30 December can allow any tax owed to be collected through a PAYE tax code, and early filing gives more time to arrange payment plans. HMRC promoted its app, online guidance, webinars, YouTube videos and a new digital PAYE service for the High Income Child Benefit Charge.
