English mayors will get new powers to levy tourist taxes
"Mayors and other local leaders know their local history, local culture and the unique attributes of their places that draw visitors in. But they need powers and funding to enable them to harness England's potential and unlock growth through investment."
""great news for London," with the extra funding helping to "cement our reputation as a global tourism and business destination""
"The levy will allow us to invest in the infrastructure these visitors need,"
Regional mayors in England will be granted powers to charge an overnight tourist levy to raise funds for local investment. The levy is intended to unlock growth by financing events, public transport improvements and other infrastructure projects. London and Greater Manchester leaders welcomed the new powers while Tees Valley's mayor said he would not introduce the charge. Scotland and Wales are introducing tourist levies next year at 5% and £1.30 per night respectively. Research suggests modest visitor fees have minimal impact on numbers and a £1-per-night levy in London could raise about £91m annually.
