Cyprus has reacted positively to the resignation of UK's trade envoy to Turkey, Afzal Khan, following criticism of his visit to the Turkish-occupied north of Cyprus. Khan defended his trip as a private matter but ultimately decided to resign to prevent distractions from government trade initiatives. The Cypriot foreign ministry regarded Khan’s visit and meeting with the area’s leader as unacceptable and indicative of zero tolerance for Turkish occupation. Cyprus has been divided since 1974 due to a military operation intended to protect Turkish Cypriots after a coup attempt for Greek union.
The recent illegal visit of British MP Afzal Khan to the areas of the Republic of Cyprus occupied by Turkiye, as well as his meeting with Mr Ersin Tatar were unacceptable and provocative actions.
Cyprus has welcomed the resignation of the UK's trade envoy to Turkey, Afzal Khan, saying it sends a resounding message amid widespread criticism of his recent visit.
His visit had caused a furore and Khan felt it best to stand down to avoid distracting from the government's work on trade deals.
The Cypriot foreign ministry stated that there is no room for tolerance regarding the north, especially for those who foster or assist in its recognition.
