Crisis? What crisis? Starmer has a delivery plan so chill out | John Crace
"Don't Panic! Don't Panic! Over the weekend the newly promoted Darren Jones, Keir Starmer's very own Keir Starmer tribute act, was out and about on the airwaves trying to convince everyone himself included that the government was not in crisis. What do you mean, chaos, he said time and again as the questions kept on coming. Each time sounding slightly more chippy. He's not a man who takes kindly to even a hint of mockery. Darren takes Darren extremely seriously."
"One that was basically an admission that most of the cabinet had been given the wrong jobs first time round. That half the cabinet had been fairly hopeless but needed to be given another chance in a different department because all the other MPs would be even worse. Besides, they would all be more of a liability to the government mouthing off their resentments from the backbenches. So, everything was about as great as it could possibly be."
Darren Jones publicly denied that the government was in crisis, responding increasingly chippily to questions. Angela Rayner resigned after failing to pay correct stamp duty, portrayed as a commonplace error comparable to past Tory mistakes. Rayner's exit and a deputy leadership election were presented as manageable and even desirable. Keir Starmer conducted an extensive reshuffle after just over a year, framed as correcting initial misassignments and giving ministers second chances. The argument emphasized a five-year mandate that tolerates a slow start, accepting a rightward tilt and prioritizing stability over backbench dissent.
