Labour MP Stella Creasy's amendment to reform abortion laws is facing opposition from key abortion providers including the British Pregnancy Advisory Service (Bpas). Rachael Clarke, head of advocacy at Bpas, emphasized that Creasy's NC20 amendment lacks support, citing the necessity for careful consideration of any significant legal changes affecting women's healthcare. Instead, Bpas endorses Tonia Antoniazzi's NC1 proposal, which has garnered backing from over 50 pro-choice organizations. Clarke insists that substantial reform needs thorough debate and input from medical bodies, warning against rushed legislative decisions.
"We are not supporting NC20, and neither are any of the abortion providers in the country," Clarke told BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Tuesday.
"Abortion law is incredibly complex. It governs 250,000 women's healthcare every single year. Because of that, it is essential that any huge change to abortion law is properly considered."
"For us, unfortunately, although we truly believe that we need overwhelming and generational change for abortion law, Stella Creasy's amendment is not the right way to do it."
