Epping Forest District Council instructed its legal team to apply to the Supreme Court after the Court of Appeal overturned a temporary injunction aimed at stopping asylum seekers being housed at The Bell Hotel in Epping. The council argued that Somani Hotels breached planning rules by not revealing its plans for the property. The Court of Appeal cautioned that similar local claims could prompt other councils to close hotels and overwhelm the asylum system. Thousands attended anti-immigration protests and counter-demonstrations outside the hotel. An asylum seeker housed there was arrested, charged, and found guilty of five offences, including sexual assault of a 14-year-old girl.
