Council leader ousted over election delay row
"a prudent use of resources"
"In Nuneaton and Bedworth, yes. And bring it on."
"running scared"
"Do I look like I'm running scared? I think the elections are going to be very difficult and I think the problem is that local elections are run on national lines."
A councillor argued that spending on elections would not be 'a prudent use of resources' and that money should instead prepare for abolishing Warwickshire's councils and replacing them with a single-tier authority by 2028. Labour retained leadership of Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council after its leader was ousted, electing deputy Steve Hey as leader at a two-and-a-half hour meeting. Hey was installed with support from two Green Party councillors, defeating Conservative challenger Wilson. Hey affirmed support for local elections in Nuneaton and Bedworth and rejected Reform leader George Finch's accusation that Labour was 'running scared', dismissing Finch as having 'too much time on his hands.'
