Civil service internships will now exclusively target students from lower socio-economic backgrounds, aiming to make Whitehall more representative of society. Successful interns will gain priority for the Fast Stream graduate program. This reform, led by Pat McFadden, aims to diversify the civil service, as current statistics show that only 12% of Fast Stream applicants come from lower socio-economic backgrounds, although they constitute a quarter of university students. The initiative aims to ensure better decision-making that reflects a diverse population.
The government will restrict civil service internships to students from poorer families as part of a drive to make Whitehall more working class.
Those who are successful on the internship will then be prioritised for entry to the Fast Stream, the main graduate programme for entry to the civil service.
Pat McFadden emphasized the need for more working class young people in the civil service to harness a broader range of talent that reflects the country.
Currently, only 12% of successful applicants to the Fast Stream are from lower socio-economic backgrounds, despite a quarter of higher education students coming from such backgrounds.
