"the UK's child poverty rate in recent years will be revised down"
"But whichever way it is measured, hardship among families with children has been getting worse in recent years,"
Official UK child poverty figures are set to be revised down after concerns that household surveys have under-reported benefit income. For more than 30 years, annual household surveys formed the basis of poverty statistics, but officials concluded respondents under-reported how much they received in benefits. From next month, child poverty estimates will use benefit-record data, likely lowering estimates dating back to 2018. The Department for Work and Pensions says improved accuracy will not change its commitment to tackling poverty. The Resolution Foundation estimated a possible 500,000 overcount in 2016-17. The revision is not expected to substantially alter projections to lift 500,000 children out of relative poverty by 2030, and campaigners warn that hardship among families with children has worsened in recent years.
