Carla Denyer has announced she will not stand for re-election as co-leader of the Green Party, focusing on her role as an MP. Alongside Adrian Ramsay, she helped the party to significant electoral gains, including four MPs and over 850 councillors. Denyer stated that her decision aligns with her goal of making a positive impact in her constituency and beyond. The Greens have not held a leadership election since 2021, and her departure prompts questions about the future leadership structure of the party at a critical time in UK politics.
Denyer emphasized her decision to focus on her parliamentary role, stating, 'I've decided that for the next few years, the best way I can serve the party and the country is to pour all of my skills, passion, and energy into being the best MP I can be, in parliament and in Bristol Central.'
Commenting on the party's leadership, Denyer noted the achievements under their co-leadership, 'We've achieved so much, taking the party from one MP to four, from 450 councillors to over 850, and winning nearly 2m votes at the last general election.'
On the current political climate, she stated, 'We're at a critical juncture in British politics. People are feeling deeply let-down and are looking for real alternatives.'
Denyer expressed the importance of the Greens' mission, stating, 'With the hard right on the rise in the UK and across the world, it's never been more important for Greens to offer a genuinely hopeful vision for our future.'
