"We cannot keep letting planning delays hold back homes and jobs. We need practical advice on how to make the system work."
"My role is to advise where the planning system can be clearer and faster, while remaining compliant with existing environmental and legal standards."
"Planning reform alone won't solve the housing crisis. Developers need certainty across regulation and financing to deliver more homes."
Catherine Howard has been appointed Infrastructure and Planning Adviser to the Chancellor to tackle planning delays and accelerate housing approvals. The role will support implementation of planning reforms and rapid delivery of measures in the Planning and Infrastructure Bill. The adviser will identify legal and procedural bottlenecks and recommend ways to speed project delivery while ensuring compliance with environmental and legal standards. Industry groups welcomed the appointment but warned planning reform alone will not solve the housing crisis and called for regulatory and financing certainty. Local authorities cautioned against reforms that undermine local decision-making or reduce scrutiny.
