A newly elected Reform UK councillor in Barnsley faced pressure to resign after photographs surfaced showing what appeared to be a swastika tattoo. The images were linked to a local tattoo studio account and dated back to 2018. The swastika is widely associated with Nazi Germany, Adolf Hitler, and the Holocaust. The councillor’s wife said the tattoo was misunderstood and connected to his brief interest in Buddhism when he was younger, adding that it was later covered. Labour politicians criticized Reform UK’s candidate vetting, with one MP referencing veterans who fought against Nazis and warning the situation could bring shame to the borough.
"Regardless of attempts to explain it away, for over 100 years the swastika has symbolised evil, antisemitism and the murder of millions, he added, saying that this debacle risks bringing shame on our borough as well as the individual concerned. Labour politicians in Barnsley questioned Reform UK's vetting procedures for council candidates."
