Andy Burnham twice declined to rule out a Labour leadership bid when questioned after an MP said he would vacate his seat to allow Burnham to return to Westminster. MP Clive Lewis said he was willing to step down to potentially make way for Burnham to return to the Commons via a by-election. Burnham said he is fully focused on his role as Greater Manchester mayor and that he has not launched any leadership challenge. Burnham refused to rule out future possibilities and criticized journalists for constant speculation. Labour rules require candidates to be MPs and to secure backing of at least 80 MPs. Two Manchester MPs previously ruled out stepping down.
