British Dual Nationals Could Use Expired Passports To Enter U.K.
"When, in January, I wrote about the upcoming changes to the British passport system that mean dual nationals will no longer be able to enter the U.K. on a foreign passport and must declare their British nationality, I was inundated with emails from concerned dual national Brits as far afield as the Netherlands, Canada and New Zealand. Some are traveling back to visit dying relatives, others for major celebrations-not all now know if they'll make it in time."
"The new rules, coming into effect on 25 February 2026, will mean that British and Irish dual nationals will only be able to enter the U.K. using their British or Irish passport, or with their foreign passport as long as they have an accompanying Certificate of Entitlement to use alongside their foreign passport. This costs £589 (nearly $800) and will need to be renewed each time they renew their passport."
New rules effective 25 February 2026 require British and Irish dual nationals to enter the U.K. using their British or Irish passport or a foreign passport accompanied by a Certificate of Entitlement. The Certificate costs £589 (nearly $800) and must be renewed each time the passport is renewed. Enforcement plans include fining airlines and ferry companies that allow passengers to travel without the correct documentation. Many overseas dual nationals lack a valid British passport and face distress, confusion, and disrupted travel plans, with some unable to renew in time. On 19 February the Home Office said carriers may, at their discretion, accept expired British passports as an alternative.
