"'The tide on online safety is beginning to turn for the better,' said Oliver Griffiths, Ofcom's Online Safety Group Director. 'This year has seen important changes for people, with new measures across many sites and apps now better protecting children from harmful content. 'But we need to see much more from tech companies next year and we'll use our full powers if they fall short.'"
"Britain's Online Safety Act ushered in some of the world's most restrictive rules on accessing online pornography earlier this year. Since July 25, visitors to adult sites have had to verify that they are over 18 either by providing credit card details, uploading a picture of their ID, or using a selfie to estimate their age. Now, more than four months after the rules were introduced, Ofcom has revealed that it has opened investigations into 92 online services - incuding those run by AVS Group Ltd."
Ofcom fined AVS Group Ltd £1 million for failing to implement robust age checks across 18 adult websites and added a £50,000 penalty for not responding to information requests. AVS operates sites including txxx.com, hdzog.com, and hclips.com, and Ofcom judged the company's age verification measures insufficient. The Online Safety Act requires visitors to adult sites to verify they are over 18 via credit card, ID upload, or a selfie-based estimate since July 25. Ofcom has opened investigations into 92 online services and has given AVS 72 hours to introduce effective age assurance or face daily fines.
