Bridget Phillipson, the education secretary, has entered the Labour deputy leadership contest as the first cabinet minister to stand and frames her candidacy around uniting the party and delivering for working people. She describes a working-class background in the north-east, rising from a single-parent family to the cabinet and emphasises confronting vested interests in education. She cites electoral success against Nigel Farage in the north-east while maintaining Labour values of equality, fairness and social justice. Bell Ribeiro-Addy has declared her candidacy and Emily Thornberry is considering a bid. Nominations require backing from 80 MPs by 5pm on Thursday.
