Gerry Adams testified in high court that he has never been a member of the Irish Republican Army, despite being sued by three bombing victims who claim he was an IRA member and army council member responsible for their injuries. Adams stated that Sinn Féin and the IRA are separate organizations, and that opponents have repeatedly sought to conflate the political party with the militant group. The 77-year-old, credited with facilitating the peace process ending the Troubles, denied being a senior or most senior IRA figure. The claimants—John Clark, Jonathan Ganesh, and Barry Laycock—seek symbolic damages of £1 each, alleging Adams's culpability in the 1973 Old Bailey bombing and the 1996 London Docklands and Manchester bombings.
