Badenoch sacks Tory rival Jenrick for secret plot to defect' to Reform latest
"Tory leader Kemi Badenoch said she has sacked shadow justice secretary Robert Jenrick due to "irrefutable evidence that he was plotting in secret to defect'' from the party. Ms Badenoch said she had received clear, irrefutable evidence that her former leadership rival was planning to leave the party in a way designed to be as damaging as possible to his shadow cabinet colleagues and the wider Conservative Party. She added that Mr Jenrick had had the whip removed and his party membership has been suspended."
"The announcement came moments before Reform UK leader Nigel Farage was due to give a high-profile press conference in Scotland, where he unveiled the new Reform Scotland leader. Speaking moments after the news broke, Mr Farage said that of course he has had conversations with Mr Jenrick, adding that he has little doubt that the former shadow minister had been considering leaving the Tories for Reform and that he would call Mr Jenrick this afternoon."
Kemi Badenoch removed Robert Jenrick from the shadow cabinet and suspended his Conservative Party membership after claiming to have received irrefutable evidence that he was secretly plotting to defect. Badenoch said Jenrick intended to leave in a manner designed to damage his shadow cabinet colleagues and the wider party. The whip was taken away and membership suspended immediately. The announcement preceded a Reform UK press conference in Scotland at which Nigel Farage unveiled a new Reform Scotland leader. Farage confirmed he had spoken with Jenrick, said he believed Jenrick had been considering joining Reform, and said he would call Jenrick that afternoon. Jenrick had recently insisted he was not leaving the party.
