Yvette Cooper will give a statement to MPs on Monday as they return to Westminster for the first time since July. Yvette Cooper will set out immigration reforms intended to end use of asylum hotels and deter small boats Channel crossings. The government claims action against gangs behind crossings is reducing arrivals, with August the lowest since 2021. Despite that, 29,003 people have crossed so far in 2025, the highest total on record for this point in the year. Widespread protests have focused on asylum hotel placements after the Court of Appeal overturned a ban on housing asylum seekers at The Bell Hotel. Political pressure and public demonstrations have dominated the summer debate on asylum policy.
