Keir Starmer plans to reduce the number of quangos, or quasi-autonomous non-governmental organizations, to alleviate bureaucratic burdens and foster economic growth. These organizations vary widely in function, from regulating the NHS to managing food safety standards. Although governments create quangos to distance political accountability, this often leads politicians to seek to reclaim control. Presently, over 300 ALBs employ around 390,000 people, collectively responsible for significant public spending. Starmer's approach reflects earlier political efforts to streamline governance and increase efficiency within public services.
Despite allowing quangos to multiply, politicians also regularly try to cut down the number of ALBs and bring more responsibility into departments.
Keir Starmer will this week set out plans to cut some quangos to reduce red tape and a bloated state, helping with economic growth.
