Geesala Post Office is confirmed to close on Sunday, June 28. The closure follows the resignation of the former postmaster. An Post states that the vacant position was advertised multiple times and that businesses in the area were canvassed without success. Additional efforts to secure another contractor to take over the office were also unsuccessful. Alternative arrangements are confirmed for customers through nearby post offices, including Bangor Erris, Bunnahowen, and Belmullet. Department of Social Protection payments will be available at Bangor Erris Post Office. The closure was raised at a municipal district meeting alongside concerns about rural planning laws and declining services in rural communities over two decades. Councillors linked service losses to population decline, particularly among younger people, and argued that planning rules are overregulated and restrict local building permissions.
"Councillors were voicing their frustration at a number of planning applications for one-off dwellings in rural areas being refused, often on the grounds of protecting scenic views. A general consensus emerged from the meeting that planning regulations were becoming overregulated, as natives from areas including Achill and Erris were being denied permission to build and return to their home parishes. Councillors argued this was contributing to falling population levels, particularly among younger people at the start of their working lives, and said this demographic decline was feeding into the loss of essential services such as the Geesala Post Office."
