"Jon Venables, who killed toddler James Bulger more than 30 years ago, will next month have his latest bid for freedom heard by the Parole Board. The 43-year-old, who tortured and murdered two-year-old James in February 1993 after abducting him from a Merseyside shopping centre, will have his case heard by parole chiefs at an oral hearing more than two years after his last appeal."
"Both boys were released on licence under new identities in June 2001, but Venables was recalled to prison in February 2010 after indecent images of children were found on his computer. He was once again freed in August 2013 and then called back in November 2017 for the same offence, with parole judges considering his case again in September 2020. In 2023, the Parole Board rejected the bid, finding he still posed a danger to children and could go on to offend again."
Jon Venables, aged 43, abducted and murdered two-year-old James Bulger in February 1993. Venables and Robert Thompson, both ten at the time, were jailed in November 1993. Both were released on licence under new identities in June 2001. Venables has been recalled to prison multiple times after being found in possession of indecent images of children, with recalls in February 2010 and November 2017 and interim releases in August 2013. The Parole Board rejected a 2023 release bid, finding he remained a danger to children. A new oral parole hearing is expected next month and James Bulger's family have been informed.
