Following Pope Francis's death on Easter Monday, Kevin Farrell, an Irish-American archbishop, has stepped in as the acting head of the Vatican, assuming the role of camerlengo. In this capacity, Farrell will oversee the Vatican's administration and prepare for the upcoming conclave to elect the next pope. Born in Dublin in 1947, Farrell has had a notable career within the Church, serving as a bishop in Dallas and overseeing significant reforms in the laity office under Pope Francis. He previously praised the late pope, highlighting his commitment to the Church's values and marginalized communities.
He taught us to live the values of the gospel with faithfulness, courage, and universal love, especially for the poorest and most marginalised, Farrell said.
Farrell has repeatedly denied knowing anything about McCarrick's behaviour at the time.
As well as taking charge of the day-to-day running of the Vatican before the next pope is elected, the camerlengo plays an important ceremonial function.
Nine years after he was appointed bishop of Dallas in 2007, Farrell received a call from Pope Francis asking him to move to Rome to head the laity office.
