Weather warnings as Spain's Storm Claudia reaches UK on Friday
"Storm Claudia will bring very heavy rainfall to a large swathe of central and southern England and Wales on Friday into Saturday. This rain will become slow moving and some areas could see up to a month's worth of rain in 24 hours. Much of this will fall on saturated ground, increasing the chances of flooding and contributing to the amber warnings we have issued. Within the amber warning areas, some could see in excess of 150mm accumulate during the event, with 60-80mm fairly widely."
"Flooding could hit parts of the UK on Friday as forecasters issued an amber warning for rain. Storm Claudia, which was named by the Spanish meteorological service, will bring heavy downpours and strong winds for much of the country. Some areas could see up to 8cm of rain, with deep flood water posing a danger to life. The warning is in place from noon until the end of the day and covers parts of Wales, the Midlands, south-west, south-east and the east of England."
Storm Claudia is expected to produce heavy downpours and strong winds across much of the UK, with an amber rain warning from noon until the end of Friday. The amber warning covers parts of Wales, the Midlands, south-west, south-east and the east of England, while a 24-hour yellow warning covers much of England from Cheshire and North Yorkshire to the south coast. Some areas could receive up to 8cm of rain and within amber areas some locations could exceed 150mm, increasing flood risk on already saturated ground. Wind gusts up to 70mph are possible in western and exposed north-west locations. Deep flood water could be life-threatening and impacts may include power cuts, travel disruption and damage to buildings. The AA advises against travelling and the storm was named by the Spanish service after affecting the Canary Islands; it is expected to remain positioned in the west rather than directly crossing the country.
