The Saga Farmann, a replica Viking cargo vessel, arrived in London after a two-year voyage retracing ancient Viking trade routes. The ship sailed from Tønsberg in Norway in April 2023, travelled along the Rhine and Danube to the Black Sea, wintered in Istanbul, then continued around the Mediterranean in 2024. Severe storm damage in Rome threatened the final leg, but repairs allowed the voyage Saga Lundenwic to proceed via France and the English Channel, including a stop at the UN Oceans Conference in Nice. The crew rotated fortnightly, lived aboard without showers, built strong bonds, and the ship is open to the public at St Katharine Docks ahead of a Classic Boat Festival.
"It's like a social experiment, you get so bonded with each other making this ship move. "It's shaped me to be a world citizen. I've got friends from all around the world now."
"Many of us want to do something, but most of our life is spent in our dreams and in our head. "I would say just do it, and do it now, because life is too short."
