Nicola Packer, accused of illegal abortion, testified she misled hospital staff about her pregnancy due to fear about care. During a Covid lockdown, she had taken abortion pills after a telemedicine consultation, only to later reveal she believed she was only 10 weeks pregnant. The prosecution argues she knew she was beyond the legal limit and changed her story as scrutiny increased. Packer expressed deep concern for her safety if hospital staff were to be aware of her actions, leading to her traumatic experience in seeking help after delivery of a much further developed fetus than expected.
Packer stated, "I thought if I went to the hospital with a dead baby they wouldn't help me, that’s what I thought."
The prosecution argued Packer knew she was beyond the legal limit when taking abortion medication but she firmly denied this, insisting she believed she was only 10 weeks pregnant.
