UK water giant to pay 44.7m over unacceptable' sewage spills
"Our investigation has found serious and unacceptable breaches in how Dwr Cymru Welsh Water has operated and maintained its sewage works and networks, which has resulted in excessive spills from storm overflows to the environment. We now expect them to focus on putting things right so that customers can regain trust in their water company and the critical service they provide."
Welsh Water has been identified by industry regulator Ofwat as having committed serious and unacceptable breaches in its sewage and network services. The company failed to adequately operate, maintain, and upgrade its wastewater network to handle sewage and wastewater levels, with insufficient processes and senior oversight. The enforcement package totals £44.7 million, with £40.6 million directed toward reducing spills at specific overflows, mitigating environmental damage, and addressing groundwater infiltration into the sewer network. An additional £4.1 million is allocated to improve river quality in extremely sensitive catchments. Ofwat's enforcement action aims to ensure the company rectifies these issues and restores customer trust.
