UK to start small boats returns to France within days' after EU gives green light
Briefly

The UK is set to begin detaining individuals arriving by small boats and returning some of them to France, following EU approval of a new treaty. This agreement allows for a one in, one out scheme where asylum seekers who arrived by small boats cannot access safe routes to the UK. An estimated 50 individuals per week are expected to be returned during an initial pilot phase that lasts until June 2026. The treaty has received endorsements from key officials, including the home secretary and the French counterpart, along with European Commission approval.
The UK will begin detaining people who arrive on small boats and returning some to France within days after the EU gave the green light to a deal agreed with the French president, Emmanuel Macron.
The treaty between France and the UK will allow the Home Office to return some asylum seekers back across the Channel for the first time in exchange for accepting others directly from France via a safe route.
About 50 people a week are expected to be returned during the pilot of the so-called one in, one out scheme, which runs until June 2026.
The final text of the deal was signed by the home secretary, Yvette Cooper, and her French counterpart, Bruno Retailleau, last week, and has been approved by the European Commission.
