UK pulls $1.15bn loan to Mozambique gas project after climate and terror concerns
"The UK government has pulled a controversial $1.15bn (870m) loan to a giant gas project in Mozambique that has been accused of fuelling the climate crisis and deadly terror attacks in the region. The business secretary, Peter Kyle, said on Monday that the UK would withdraw its export finance to the Mozambique liquified natural gas project, five years after it ignited bitter opposition from campaigners over its impact on human rights, security and the environment."
"The Mozambique support package was first agreed in 2020, just over a year after MPs on the environmental audit committee and the Labour party called for an end to the Conservative government's support for polluting projects overseas, saying it undermines the UK's climate commitments. Kyle said officials had evaluated the risks around the project and concluded they had increased since 2020."
The UK government withdrew an £870m export finance package for the Mozambique liquified natural gas project. The project has been accused of fuelling the climate crisis and linked to deadly insurgent attacks that killed more than 800 people in 2021. The developer, TotalEnergies, was preparing to restart the scheme after operations were paused following the attack. UK Export Finance had originally claimed the project would support over 2,000 UK jobs and could supply gas to British households via a Centrica deal. Parliamentary pressure and green-group opposition prompted a reassessment that found increased risks since 2020.
