The Children's Commissioner, Rachel de Souza, is advocating for the introduction of a GCSE in Ukrainian to aid child refugees coping with the trauma of war. Concerns have arisen over Ukrainian teens learning Russian in UK schools, which many find distressing. After discussions between Ukraine's Education Minister and the UK Education Secretary, there is some movement towards reintroducing the qualification that was dropped in 1995. However, skepticism remains about the feasibility of this initiative as the Department for Education takes steps to explore options with exam boards.
I've seen for myself the great work St Mary's Ukrainian School is doing with the children who attend. It has become a sanctuary for families, helping displaced children reach their goals and aspirations in spite of the immense upheaval they've experienced.
Why should I study Russian? I'm Ukrainian and I want to show it. The language is paramount for all us.
