
"Detectives have launched a murder investigation after the death of a man in HMP Wakefield. Officers were called by staff at the prison at 9.39am this morning to reports of a serious assault on a prisoner. A man aged 48 was found with serious injuries. Despite medical attention he was pronounced dead at the scene. Two men aged 25 and 43 have been arrested on suspicion of murder and are currently in police custody. Detectives from the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team are investigating and inquiries remain ongoing."

Ian Watkins, 48, a convicted child sex offender serving a 29-year prison term with an additional six years on licence, was attacked with a knife at HMP Wakefield and pronounced dead on Saturday morning. Prison staff called police at 9.39am reporting a serious assault. Emergency services attended and the prison went into lockdown following the incident. Two men aged 25 and 43 have been arrested and are in police custody. Detectives from the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team have launched a murder investigation and inquiries remain ongoing. Watkins had been jailed in December 2013 after admitting multiple sex offences, including the attempted rape of a baby, and had previously been attacked in custody in 2023.
