Trans women arrested Britain's railways to be strip-searched by male officers

Following a recent landmark ruling by the UK Supreme Court, the British Transport Police (BTP) have updated their policy regarding the strip-searching of trans women in custody. The ruling clarifies that the legal definition of a woman under the Equality Act 2010 does not include trans women with gender recognition certificates. As a result, BTP will now conduct same-sex searches in line with the biological birth sex of detainees, reversing the previous policy that permitted searches by officers matching the acquired gender of the individual.

Under previous policy, trans women with a gender recognition certificate were searched by officers matching their acquired gender, now reversed to biological sex.
