Rye in East Sussex ranks as the third-best day trip from London for winter 2025. The town features cobbled streets, medieval houses and is packed with cosy country pubs. Visitors can enjoy log-side seats and Sussex real ale at The George, a warming glass of red at the Globe Inn Marsh, and the Mermaid Inn's enormous fireplace and historic priest's hole linked to 18th-century smugglers. Travel time is about one hour 30 minutes by train from London St Pancras International and around two hours 30 minutes by car. Avoid drinking and driving.
