"We were just passing by and it was actually the lock keeper that said to keep an eye out for what he thought was a seal. My son just caught it as it bobbed up, but that was the best shot we could get."
"It looked slightly furry in its appearance, and it had quite a flat nose. I'd say in length, it was the size of a medium to large dog, maybe like a German Shepherd or Alsatian."
"Her opinion - and she checked with colleagues - was that she thought it was an otter. She said a seal and a beaver wouldn't come up that far, and they wouldn't be able to negotiate the locks."
A family walking near Old Windsor Lock in Berkshire filmed an enigmatic creature swimming in the Thames. The creature displayed a black head that dipped in and out of the water, a slightly furry appearance and a flat nose, and was estimated to be the size of a medium-to-large dog. Online viewers suggested seal, capybara, sea lion, turtle, coypu, beaver and otter. A local wildlife trust representative favored an otter while a Natural History Museum identification officer said identification was not possible without seeing the tail. The footage attracted tens of thousands of views and widespread debate.
