TfL eyes major upgrade so Tube can accept National Rail barcode tickets
"London Underground could start accepting National Rail style code train tickets in the future, as TfL has started looking at plans to add barcode scanners to its tube station ticket barriers. Transport for London ( TfL) has looked into the issue before, as National Rail tickets issued in barcode format can include travel on the London Underground, and that can cause issues when barcode tickets aren't accepted at London Underground stations."
"To try out an idea, in June 2024, London Underground staff at Farringdon and Stratford stations were issued with handheld barcode scanners to check tickets before letting passengers through. Following the success, this was expanded to six stations - Farringdon, Highbury and Islington, Kentish Town, Moorgate, Old Street and Stratford. However that still requires customers to seek out a member of staff when their ticket can't work at the ticket barrier."
Transport for London is exploring adding fixed barcode scanners to London Underground ticket barriers to accept National Rail barcode tickets. Trials used handheld scanners at Farringdon and Stratford in June 2024 and expanded to six stations after success. Manual intervention currently lets customers pass when barriers fail, slowing flows and tying up staff during peak times. Priority roll-out would target stations shared with National Rail, then cross-London interchanges and central tube stations, expanding outward as needed. Back-of-house systems will require upgrades and legacy magnetic single tickets would be replaced with barcode versions for affected customers.
