
"The terrorist who killed two Jewish men outside a synagogue on the holiest day of the religion's calendar was a British citizen of Syrian descent, police have said. Three people have been arrested on suspicion of planning a terror attack in connection with the killings carried out by Jihad Al-Shamie, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) added. Al-Shamie, 35, who is understood to have entered the UK as a young child and been granted British citizenship in 2006 when he was around the age of 16,"
"It is understood that Al-Shamie's name has not appeared in initial searches of police and security service records, and he is not thought to have been under investigation. GMP said officers were "working to understand the motivation behind the attack" and confirmed the killer had not been referred to the Government's Prevent anti-radicalisation scheme. He appears to have lived in Prestwich, around two miles from the scene."
Two men, Adrian Daulby, 53, and Melvin Cravitz, 66, were killed after a 35-year-old attacker drove into a group of people outside Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue and then stabbed a man. Jihad Al-Shamie, a British citizen of Syrian descent, was shot dead by police seven minutes after officers were alerted. Three others were hospitalised with serious injuries. Greater Manchester Police arrested three people on suspicion of planning a terror attack. Al-Shamie is not thought to have appeared in initial police or security service records and had not been referred to the Government's Prevent anti-radicalisation scheme. Neighbours linked him to a Prestwich property.
