Ola Al Hamwi, a Syrian refugee, is heartbroken as the Home Office seeks to bar her terminally ill mother from the UK, preventing a final reunion with her grandchildren. Despite being granted refugee status in 2015 and applying for family reunion for her mother, Soaad Al Shawa, both applications were rejected. A tribunal later ruled in the family's favor, citing their right to family life, but the Home Office's appeal against this ruling has left them devastated and waiting for a resolution amidst urgent circumstances.
My mum really perked up when she heard the news and started to eat more, said Al Hamwi, 35. All she wants to do before she dies is to see us and the kids.
The family were overjoyed and relayed the news to Al Shawa, who began to make preparations to come to the UK.
