Suspended Labour MP Mike Amesbury received a 10-week jail sentence for assaulting Paul Fellows after a dispute over a bridge closure in Frodsham. The incident, which occurred while Amesbury was intoxicated, was captured on CCTV, showing him punch Fellows multiple times, even after the victim fell to the ground. Amesbury, who has been sitting as an independent MP since his suspension following the arrest, expressed remorse following his guilty plea. The court emphasized the need for an immediate custodial sentence as a deterrent against such violent behavior.
Upon arriving at a taxi rank, he was approached by Mr Fellows who began to remonstrate about a bridge closure in the town.
Footage showed Amesbury punch Mr Fellows to the head, knocking him to the ground, then follow him onto the road and start to punch him again.
Speaking outside court after entering his guilty plea, Amesbury said: I'm sincerely sorry to Mr Fellows and his family.
Deputy senior district judge Tan Ikram said: In this case an immediate custodial sentence is, in my judgment, necessary as a punishment and a deterrent.
