On the second anniversary of the civil war in Sudan, the EU and the UK pledged $590 million in aid at a conference in London. The war, which began in 2023, has caused immense suffering, displacing 14 million people and leading to widespread famine. Despite the aid promises, officials stressed the futility of assistance without a cessation of hostilities. German Foreign Minister Baerbock highlighted the importance of bringing peace to the region, while UK Foreign Secretary Lammy underscored the need for patient diplomacy and persuading warring parties to prioritize civilian protection. No Sudanese representatives were present at the conference.
We have got to persuade the warring parties to protect civilians, to let aid in and across the country and to put peace first.
No amount of humanitarian assistance will be sufficient if this war continues.
Many have given up on Sudan, and have conceded that continued conflict is inevitable.
Achieving peace will take time, renewed international effort and patient diplomacy.
