Step-free access work at Wandsworth Town station to start in February 2026
"Network Rail has confirmed that long planned work to install lifts at Wandsworth Town station in southwest London will start in February 2026. The station, served by SWR trains, is raised on railway arches and has four platforms, accessed via stairs from a corridor that runs through one of the arches from a street-level entrance on the south side. Although it has four platforms, as the middle two are a shared island platform, just three lifts will be needed to make all four platforms accessible."
"Preparatory works will begin in February with the installation of hoardings and ducting, followed by the installation of a temporary scaffold bridge in April. Piling works to form the foundations for the new lift will take place between May and November 2026, with the lift shaft installed in February 2027. The station upgrade is scheduled for completion in summer 2027."
"Network Rail expects that the station will remain open throughout the works, although some entrances and platforms may be temporarily closed during construction. There will be some changes to SWR services, which will be shared as the programme progresses. Over 3.75 million people used the station between April 2024 and March 2025, making Wandsworth Town the 15th busiest station on the South Western Railway network."
Work to install lifts at Wandsworth Town station will begin with hoardings and ducting in February 2026, then a temporary scaffold bridge in April. Piling for lift foundations will take place May–November 2026, with the lift shaft installed in February 2027 and completion expected summer 2027. Three lifts will provide step-free access to all four platforms. The station should remain open, though some entrances or platforms may close temporarily and SWR services may change. A new Odyssey Way entrance with ticket barriers will improve northern access. The project costs about £20 million, with just over £7 million from Wandsworth Council and the remainder from the DfT Access for All scheme. Over 3.75 million passengers used the station in the year to March 2025.
