Keir Starmer has unveiled a new military aid initiative for Ukraine, financed by the UK's interest from frozen Russian assets. This involves sending 350 advanced air defence missiles, which have been modified for rapid ground launch. This unprecedented move highlights the UK’s effort to strengthen Ukraine's defence using seized Russian funds. Starmer and Defence Secretary John Healey emphasized the importance of this aid in addressing Russia’s aggression and highlighted the UK’s military capabilities to adapt for modern warfare, while reinforcing the commitment to Ukraine's security amid rising global tensions ahead of the NATO summit.
Starmer stated, "Russia, not Ukraine, should pay the price for Putin's barbaric and illegal war. It is only right we use seized Russian assets to strengthen Ukraine's air defences."
Defence Secretary John Healey emphasized the conversions' quick turnaround, noting that the missiles would save lives amidst ongoing indiscriminate attacks by Moscow.
