"The fact that this has taken place on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, makes it all the more horrific,"
"We will do everything to keep our Jewish community safe,"
"Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by this appalling incident and we greatly appreciate the swift actions of the emergency services,"
"in close contact"
A car and stabbing attack at Heaton Park Synagogue in Crumpsall, north Manchester, occurred at about 09:30 BST on Yom Kippur. Two people died and a third person, believed to be the suspect, died after being shot by police. Three other members of the public remain in a serious condition with injuries from both the vehicle and stab wounds. The prime minister returned early from Copenhagen and ordered additional police assets to be deployed at synagogues across the country. The king and royal household expressed shock and sorrow, and the Israeli embassy and community organisations are coordinating support with authorities.
