South Korea's former President Yoon Suk Yeol is set to be indicted for abuse of authority, coinciding with his trial for leading an insurrection through a martial law declaration. Following his impeachment and loss of power, Yoon has not been detained on this new charge. Prosecutors stated the additional indictment follows a raid at his residence linked to bribery accusations involving his wife. Conviction in the insurrection case could result in severe penalties, including life imprisonment, as South Korea prepares for a snap election in June.
"We have since proceeded with the [insurrection] trial while conducting supplementary investigations into the abuse of power allegation, leading to this additional indictment," prosecutors said.
Yoon was first charged in January, when he was still president as "the ringleader of an insurrection," a charge not covered by presidential immunity.
If convicted of the insurrection charge, Yoon could be sentenced to life in prison.
The additional charge was announced a day after investigators raided Yoon's private residence in the capital, Seoul.
