South Bermondsey station reopens after its platform was replaced over Christmas
"The station, managed by Southern, can be politely described as the sort of station with a face fit for radio, with barely a shed of an entrance and a dank staircase up to the platforms. All this is accentuated by the station being a bit of a walk from the main road, along a long path that just happens to be a disused freight railway line. The original station opened in 1866 in an arguably more convenient location on the Rotherhithe New Road, but moved to its current location in 1928."
"Originally built from wood, the station was rebuilt in the 1970s using a precast concrete platform structure. However, the concrete has decayed over the decades, and the platform surface needed replacing, as in places it bounced a bit when you walked on it. The station closed on Saturday 27th December, and the old platform was demolished over Christmas, allowing them space to rebuild the replacement platform while trains were running past just inches away."
South Bermondsey station reopened after a long closure to replace an ageing, unstable platform. The station is managed by Southern and has a minimal entrance and a dank staircase up to the platforms, reached via a long path along a disused freight railway. The original station opened in 1866 and moved to the current location in 1928. The 1970s precast concrete platform decayed over decades and began to bounce underfoot, necessitating replacement. The station closed on 27 December, the old platform was demolished over Christmas, and reopening was delayed from 4 to 5 January. The refurbishment did not include the entrance, but the platform no longer bounces.
