Ian Huntley, a 52-year-old former school caretaker convicted of murdering 10-year-olds Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman in 2002, died following a severe attack at HMP Frankland prison in Durham on February 26. Huntley was struck repeatedly over the head with a metal bar by inmate Anthony Russell, 43, who reportedly shouted "I've done it" after the assault. The attack caused severe brain trauma and left Huntley blind. After brain tests confirmed a vegetative state, life support was withdrawn on Friday. Russell, a murderer and rapist sentenced to a whole-life tariff in 2021 for three murders, was detained in connection with the attack. Huntley had been serving a life sentence with a minimum 40-year term for the Soham murders.
