Soham child killer Ian Huntley confirmed dead after attack in maximum security prison
"The murders of Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman remains one of the most shocking and devastating cases in our nation's history, and our thoughts are with their families. Huntley, who murdered the 10-year-olds in 2002, had been on life support in hospital after being hit repeatedly over the head by an inmate armed with a metal bar."
"Huntley never recovered from the battering and never stood much of a chance of doing so. The attack left Huntley blind, and his life support was switched off at lunchtime on Friday after brain tests showed he was in a vegetative state."
"Murderer and rapist Anthony Russell, 43, reportedly shouted 'I've done it, I've done it' after Huntley was attacked in the recycling area of the prison. Russell was sentenced to a whole-life tariff in 2021 for the murders of Julie Williams, 58, and her son David Williams, 32."
Ian Huntley, 52, died following severe brain trauma sustained in a prison attack on February 26 at HMP Frankland in Durham. Huntley was repeatedly struck over the head by an inmate armed with a metal bar, leaving him blind and in a vegetative state. Life support was withdrawn on Friday, and he was confirmed dead on Saturday. Anthony Russell, 43, a murderer and rapist serving a whole-life sentence, was detained in connection with the attack. Huntley had been serving a life sentence for murdering 10-year-old Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman in Soham, Cambridgeshire, in 2002, with a recommendation to serve at least 40 years.
