Shocking': Police with assault and harassment convictions still serving in UK forces
"Police with convictions for violence, harassment and assault are still serving in UK forces, despite repeated pledges to crack down on rogue officers, The Independent can reveal. In the aftermath of the latest damning inquiry into Sarah Everard's death at the hands of a serving Met Police officer, which found vetting recommendations have still not been fully implemented, new figures show that at least 49 serving police officers have kept their jobs despite being convicted of crimes since 2018."
"Among the convictions that did not result in dismissal were several for serious offences, including harassment, assault by beating and dangerous driving, according to freedom of information figures from 27 of the 43 police forces in England and Wales. One police officer in Cumbria, who was given a final written warning after committing domestic common assault in 2018, has since resigned."
Freedom of information responses from 27 of 43 forces show at least 49 serving police officers convicted since 2018 retained their posts rather than being dismissed. Convictions include harassment, assault by beating, dangerous driving and domestic common assault, with many officers receiving final written warnings. One Cumbria officer who received a final written warning after a 2018 domestic common assault later resigned. Forty-four of the 49 officers are men. Specific cases include Met, Greater Manchester, Merseyside and Surrey officers. Many convictions predate 2021 and vetting recommendations after Sarah Everard’s death remain incompletely implemented, prompting campaigner concern and criticism about damaged public trust.
